There are 6 major types of child abuse:
- Physical abuse - a non-accidental injury to the child (i.e. punching. beating, kicking, biting, shaking, throwing, stabbing, choking, hitting, burning or harming the child in anyway).
- Neglect - the failure of the parent, guardian, or caregiver to supply a child with the basic needs.
- Sexual Abuse - activities by the parent or caregiver such as rape, indecent exposure, exploitation through prostitution, and penetration.
- Emotional Abuse - pattern of behavior that impairs the child's psychological development, this includes criticism, rejection, threats, as well as withholding love and giving guidance.
- Abandonment - now considered a form of neglect, it is when the child's parents have no known identity, or the whereabouts of the parents are unknown, the child is left alone in circumstances that could harm the child.
- Substance Abuse - substance abuse can be a number of things,
- Prenatal exposure to drugs or alcohol due to the mother's use during pregnancy.
- manufacture of drugs in the presence of a child.
- selling, distributing, or giving illegal drugs or alcohol to a child.
